On the command ‘set’ the buttocks are raised slowly to a position slightly higher than the shoulders. It is important that the young athlete has his or her weight in front of the legs to facilitate a powerful push on the ‘go’ command. WEB COPY ©EVEQUE
On the command ‘go’ the young athlete drives the body forward with the quick movement of the legs and arms. It is important to remain low out of the start and the body is gradually raised into the full sprinting technique after a distance of approximately 20–30 metres.

Some young athletes will find it difficult to understand why the feet are placed so far behind the line in a crouch start as it appears to be giving distance away. It is important therefore, to highlight that by appearing to sacrifice half a metre in a crouch start position, they can gain approximately 3 metres more in distance than if they were using a standing start.
