Sportshall Handbook 6th Edition
SECTION 6
The scoring system used by the Sportshall Decathlon and Pentathlon makes both ideally suited to Virtual Competition and now schools can easily form remote partnerships with others, whether they be in the same cluster or even a different country! Say best 7 girls and best 7 boys WEB COPY ©EVEQUE Example: DEVELOPING SCHOOL TO SCHOOL LINKS THROUGH SPORT VIRTUAL COMPETITION Team Size: Team of 8 Mixed team of 8 girls and 8 boys Whole Class Scorers: Best 6 Best 5 girls and best 5 boys
To facilitate this, there is an Excel scoring package downloadable from www.sportshall.org . This software can accommodate the options of individual versus individual right the way up to multi school competition where all the children can participate. Team Structure Teams can contain any number of members so no child needs to be left out. They can be all girls teams, all boys teams or mixed. It is not necessary for all the teams to be the same size. Scoring System The scoring system is the same as for the Sportshall Awards and uses the points tables shown on pages 48 and 49. These points are then combined as per the example on page 57. Scoring Members The organisers must mutually agree the nominated number to score in the team competition but all the children in each team participate. The number nominated to make up a team does not have to be an exact number nor a balanced number of girls and boys; therefore, should a team member feel poorly or fail to turn up on the day the team is not disadvantaged because the system of reserves or substitutes is already built into the scoring method.
There are two formats: 1. Competition based on the individual over all scores for the multi-events or 2. Competition based on the best individuals in each of an agreed number of events The advantage of format 2 is that a wide range of skills provides an increased opportunity for each child to find at least one event at which they excel therefore avoiding any team member being pinpointed as letting the team down. More information on using the Sportshall programme for Virtual Competition can be found at www.sportshall.org Please note that alternative Pentathlon events can be used. Further details of this can be found on page 45.
